The Call of Wild Wyoming
Wyoming has a way of making you feel small in the best possible way.
I traveled through the state in 2016 and came home with a camera roll full of the kinds of scenes that are hard to forget: golden aspens reflected in still water, wide-open valleys framed by the Tetons, bison crossing the road, mist rising off rivers, endless blue skies, and some of the darkest night skies I had ever seen.
At the time, the trip felt like a reminder of why I’m drawn to places that still feel wild. There is so much space in Wyoming — physical space, but also the kind of mental space that comes from being somewhere quiet enough to notice the landscape changing around you.
We spent our days chasing light, hiking, exploring back roads, watching wildlife, and stopping constantly because another view somehow seemed better than the last. Fall had begun to take hold, turning the trees brilliant shades of yellow and orange against the mountains.
Some of my favorite moments weren’t planned at all: watching a bison wander across the road, seeing birds take off from a quiet pond, catching the last light on the Tetons, and standing beneath a sky filled with more stars than I could count.
This gallery is a collection of photographs from that trip and my own small response to the “Call of the WY” — the idea that Wyoming invites you to step away from the familiar, get outside, and experience a place that still feels beautifully wild.
Years later, these images still make me want to go back.
